From earliest childhood, Jonathan’s life was shaped by the challenges of severe eczema. Affecting his hands, feet, face, and behind the knees, the condition disrupted his sleep with relentless itching and affecting his self-esteem with unsightly red, dry and cracked skin.
Although eczema had afflicted several generations of his family, Jonathan refused to have his life defined by the condition.
Conventional treatments like steroid creams offered Jonathan only fleeting relief. Over time, they thinned the skin, left greasy residues, and failed to address the root cause of the condition.
Desperate for answers, he tried Chinese medicine, dietary changes, allergy tests, and countless over-the-counter products. With none providing a lasting solution he learned to manage the condition as best he could.
The pivotal moment came when his son developed eczema on his eyelid, an area too delicate for steroid creams. Seeing his son tormented by the familiar itching and scratching, Jonathan was determined to find a solution.
Jonathan set out to create a natural, effective remedy. Through rigorous research and experimentation, he developed his first basic ointment using just beeswax and olive oil. While reasonably effective, the treatment needed to be refined to maximise its soothing properties, reduce greasiness, and improve its scent.
After 36 attempts and much testing, Jonathan arrived at his unique formula consisting of 24 different waxes, butters and oils and he called it Rescue Balm
His son tested the balm and in just three days, the eczema on his eyelid had completely cleared up. Encouraged by this success, Jonathan shared the balm with friends and family. Their overwhelmingly positive feedback and stories of how it had helped long term conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and rosacea encouraged Jonathan to release the product commercially.
Jonathan launched Essence of Nature, his skincare brand, at the end of 2024. Handmade in Scotland, his products reflect Jonathan’s core values: locally sourced and ethically chosen ingredients, eco-friendly, fully recyclable packaging. His products are free from harmful chemicals, not tested on animals and contain no parabens, palm oil, or artificial colours, fragrances or preservatives.
